Alcohol and tobacco excise duty
The measure
The Chancellor has announced that there will be no change in alcohol and tobacco duties when the VAT rate returns to 17.5% on 1 January 2010.
Our view
Since the rates of duty were increased to counterbalance the 2008 VAT rate reduction, the effect of this is an overall increase in taxation on these products.
