Relief from the 40% rate of tax for service charges and sinking funds in the private sectorLandlords are required to hold service charges and sinking funds on trust for leaseholders. If the income earned on these trusts exceeds £1,000 per year tax is payable at the rate applicable to trusts (40%). A relief from this charge applies to social landlords. From 6 April 2007 this relief will be extended to all landlords so that they will only pay tax at basic rate.
